From 1.7L Bowl to 300L Trough: Choosing the Right Automatic Waterer for Your Herd
2026/10/23
One Product Category, Three Very Different Decisions
Walk through any livestock equipment catalogue and the waterers look interchangeable: a bowl, a valve, a hose connection. In practice, the choice between a small automatic bowl and a long multi-hole trough determines how much labour a farm spends on water, how evenly animals drink, and how much capital is tied up per head. Getting it wrong is rarely catastrophic — it is simply expensive, every day, for ten years.
Shanghai Terrui International, a livestock equipment manufacturer since 2002, builds all three formats. The comparison below is drawn from its current production range.
Format 1: The Cast Iron Push-Paddle Bowl
Model TRWA-00 is the traditional choice for tie-stalls, calf pens and small paddocks. The body is heavy-duty cast iron with an enamel coating, and the drinking mechanism is a stainless steel push paddle that the animal operates itself.
- Capacity: 1.7 L (middle) and 2.7 L (large)
- Flow rate: 4–15 L per minute
- Exchangeable brass valve, 1/2" top and bottom inlets
- Four-screw mounting, smooth finish, rounded edges
The advantage is durability and control: a push paddle delivers water only when the animal asks, so spillage and bedding waste stay low. The limitation is throughput — one animal drinks at a time, which suits individual housing but not group pens at peak demand.
Format 2: The PE Drinking Bowl
The TRWD series replaces cast iron with UV-stabilised polyethylene. A floating valve holds a constant level, and the left-side 1/2" brass inlet keeps plumbing simple.
| Model | Capacity | Flow rate | Dimensions | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TRWD-00-SH*G | 4.0 L (1.0 gal) | 6 L/min | 300 × 225 × 235 mm | Calves, sheep, goats |
| TRWD-00*G | 9.3 L (2.5 gal) | 6 L/min | 400 × 297 × 280 mm | Horses, cattle, group pens |
| TRWD-00-SH*BL | 4.0 L (1.0 gal) | 6 L/min | Roto-moulded LLDPE, 1.5 kg | Dairy and beef cows |
Polyethylene bowls are impact resistant, light to ship and cheap to install — 4 units per carton, 2 per case for the larger size. They are the practical middle ground for pasture systems where a trough is moved between paddocks.
Format 3: The Insulated Multi-Hole Trough
When a single water point must serve 40 to 80 head, bowls stop scaling. The TPT401BLH trough is 4 metres long with six drinking positions, a 300 L capacity and a 100–120 L/min float valve. Polyurethane foam between two polyethylene walls keeps water ice-free in winter and cooler in summer at no energy cost, and an optional 1800 W thermostat-controlled heating kit covers extreme climates.
A Quick Decision Framework
- Under 10 head, individual housing: cast iron push-paddle bowl — lowest waste, longest service life.
- 10–40 head, rotational grazing: PE bowl or a pair of bowls on a portable line.
- 40+ head, fixed winter yard: insulated multi-hole trough — fewer refusals, no daily ice breaking.
- Extreme cold or high-value genetics: insulated trough plus factory heating kit.
Why Source All Three From One Factory
Mixing brands means mixing valve threads, spare parts and warranty terms. Terrui manufactures bowls, troughs, fans, calf hutches and electric fencing under one ISO 9001 quality system, holds 25 patents across more than 100 products, and exports to over 60 countries. Buyers can consolidate a container, standardise on one brass valve family, and keep a single technical contact for after-sales support.
OEM and ODM orders are welcome, including colour, logo and packaging customisation, with free samples for qualified projects. Minimum order quantity is 12 pieces per model, payment by L/C or T/T.
