An Exhaust Fan That Can Be Turned Down

Most agricultural exhaust fans run at one speed: full. That is fine in July and wasteful in April, when a little air movement would do and the motor still draws its rated power. This unit is built around a brushless EC motor with electronic speed control from 20 to 100 per cent, so the fan can follow the temperature instead of the calendar.

Motor and control

Permanent magnets in the rotor and electronic commutation in the drive replace the brushed DC arrangement and the belt drive used on older fans. Efficiency is about 10 per cent higher at the same duty than a conventional direct-drive fan, and because speed is set electronically there is no pulley to change when the ventilation requirement shifts. Slow running also cuts noise, which is why the fan is measured at 70 dB or below.

Where variable speed pays

In greenhouse tunnels, where the set point changes through the day, and in livestock buildings where the fan runs at night in summer and only at midday in spring. Pair the fan with a thermostat or a climate controller and it will hold a band of two or three degrees instead of switching between full blast and silence.
