Why the Colour of a Trough Matters in the Sun
On an exposed pasture, a dark trough absorbs solar heat and the water inside climbs towards air temperature by mid-afternoon. Cattle drink less, and warm standing water grows algae faster than most farmers expect.
Blue shell, cooler water
The outer skin is pigmented through the polyethylene rather than painted, so the colour does not fade or flake. A lighter exterior reflects more of the sun's energy, and the insulated wall behind it slows the transfer that remains. The result is water that stays closer to the temperature of the supply line even in an unshaded paddock.

Algae and hygiene
Warm, still, nutrient-rich water is a breeding ground. Keeping the tank cooler slows growth, and the smooth inner surface means a brush pass removes the film before it sets. Because the top is open, a quick weekly check with a torch shows whether cleaning is due.
Positioning on pasture
Face the long axis north to south where possible so both sides dry evenly, and set the trough on a gravel pad rather than bare soil to stop mud building up around the base. Keep it away from the shade line of trees, which drop leaves and debris into open water.
Repairs and parts
Float valves and fittings are standard sizes, so a replacement can be sourced locally rather than ordered from overseas. Small scuffs on the shell need no attention; polyethylene does not rust or delaminate.
