The Cheapest Part of a Lameness Programme
Lameness costs more than any other health problem on a dairy, and the footbath is the least expensive tool for reducing it. What matters is that the bath holds its shape under a cow's weight, holds its solution instead of leaking it into the yard, and can be emptied and cleaned without being dragged around.
Body and wall thickness
Rotomoulded LLDPE with a wall thick enough to stay level when a 700 kg cow steps in. The material flexes under load and returns, rather than cracking at the corner like a rigid plastic box. The brown colour hides the staining that any footbath picks up after a few weeks of copper sulphate or formalin.
Using it well
- Place in the return lane where every cow walks through it once a day.
- Fill to a depth that covers the hoof up to the coronary band.
- Empty and rinse after each group; do not leave solution standing overnight.
- Two baths in series, water then solution, gives noticeably better results.
- Slope or lift one end to empty without tipping the whole unit.

Fitting the bath into the routine
Site it on flat concrete in the return race, with a gap of at least 1 m before the parlour entrance so solution drains from the hooves before the cow is milked. Record which days the bath is used and which product was in it, because a lameness programme only works when the treatment is consistent rather than occasional.
