An open trough collects whatever the wind delivers: dust, leaves, feathers and the occasional rodent. Each of those adds organic load, and organic load is what turns a clean basin into a green one within a fortnight.
What the cover and balls do
The moulded cover shields the basin from debris while leaving drinking openings at each position. Inside, floating balls sit on the surface and reduce the exposed area, which cuts evaporation and slows heat gain in summer. Together they keep the water cooler, cleaner and less inviting to algae.

Dairy specifics
Milk yield responds to water intake more sharply than most other inputs. Cows prefer clean, cool water and will drink less from a fouled trough, so a covered unit often pays for itself in litres of milk rather than in saved labour alone. Six openings keep a returning milking group from crowding one spot.
Cleaning routine
Lift the cover, brush the walls and floor, flush through the drain and refit. Doing this weekly during warm months keeps biofilm from establishing. Check the balls for cracks each time; a waterlogged ball sits low and loses its insulation value.
Site preparation
Pour a level concrete pad slightly larger than the footprint, or use compacted gravel where concrete is impractical. Anchor through the base flanges, and leave service access at the valve end.
